Trick Display

Information presented here is relevant in cases when the scoring program also provides information about the tricks taken in the play of a particular board.

There are several ways in which the number of tricks taken can be presented. The three supported formats are:

Total tricks
This is simply the total number of tricks taken. For example, if the contract was 3NT and you just made it, the number of tricks you took was 9, and 9 is the number displayed. If you were down 1 trick, the number displayed is 8. This is the default display style.
Relative tricks
Some refer to this as European notation. The number of the tricks shown is relative to the contract. For example, if the contract was 3NT and you just made it, the tricks are displayed as =. If you made 7 tricks (down 2), the tricks displayed are  -2. If you made 10 tricks (1 overtrick), the tricks displayed are +1.
American style
If the contract is made, exactly or with overtricks, then the number of tricks over the book (first 6 tricks) is shown, otherwise, the number of undertricks are displayed as a negative number. For example, if the contract was 3NT and you just made it, the tricks are displayed as 3. If you made 7 tricks (down 2), the tricks are displayed as  -2. If you made 10 tricks (1 overtrick), the tricks displayed are 4.

Different people may have different preferences regarding which style of trick display is the best. Because of that, on the screen showing personal scores, an interface to set the preferred style is present. Any choice made here is applicable to other pages where the number of tricks is displayed and is "remembered" the next time you visit result pages.
