images showing up rotated on the page

Sometimes, an image that looks normal on your computer or tablet, when uploaded to the web site, looks rotated by 90 degrees, or flipped upside down. This is not unusual when pictures are taken using smart phones. They include rotation information with the image so that it can be correctly displayed, but some web browsers ignore this information.

So, how do we fix it?

The fix is relatively simple:

  • open the image in your native image editor application (MS Paint on Windows, Preview on Mac).
  • take this opportunity to rescale the image, as they are usually in a resolution that is much higher than is needed for web publishing.
  • then, just save it - that's it!

If you now upload the save image, it should show up in a correct orientation.
